Great Leadership Begins By Leading Yourself with Stephen Shedletzky

Written by Casted | Feb 3, 2022 12:50:00 PM

At a young age, we’re taught the importance of leadership.

For example, look at the game most of us were playing in grade school: Follow the Leader.

Kids would itch to have the chance to become the leader whether that would be walking the class to the bus stop, lunch line, art class, etc.

We would present ourselves to the teacher as model leaders by showing how quiet we could be, how well we can get our classmates to follow along in a straight line, or how well-liked we were by our peers.

Now looking at ourselves as leaders today, do you happen to see any of those qualities present?

In our fourth episode of Casting a Vision, Casted CEO and host, Lindsay Tjepkema is joined by Speaker and Advisor for Leaders, Stephen Shedletzky to discuss what makes up the qualities of leadership. Listen now for a deep dive into this concept and insight into being a great leader considering all that is happening in our world.

Digging into Key Takeaways

In each episode, we like to highlight the key takeaways from each show. Think of it as a podcast outline or live show notes. Here are just a few of the takeaways that really stood out to us in this episode.

Accountability as Agreements 🤝

There’s a fine line between autonomy and accountability when it comes to creating a work-life balance. Too much autonomy can cause a bit of chaos, and no leader wants that for themselves. On the other hand, too much accountability can let the work-life creativity flow come to a halt (which can make work a less fun place to be at). All this to say, look at your leadership balancing scale. Is it tipping towards one side a bit too much?

Business IS personal 👥

Do you perceive yourself as just a cog in a big iron machine, grinding its gears day in and day out to make a sale? Or do you see yourself as the man behind the curtain of the big iron machine, working tirelessly to keep your perception afloat? If you chose the second option, then congratulations! Understanding that business is personal is an attribute that great leaders have. Not a skill that they can be taught.

Leadership begins with leading self 🔑

What do you get when you cross the teachings of the Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you) and the teachings of the Platinum Rule (Treat others the way that they wish to be treated)? Answer? An excellent leader. When coming into a leadership position, those who acknowledge what it takes to make the organization successful are those who make the difference between good and great leaders. Without understanding those two aspects, the leading self has not been discovered, and your work style will be thrown off balance.
